Toucans Year 3

Kingsdown and Ringwould Church of England Primary School

Welcome back!  I hope you enjoyed your Easter break.

Here is a brief outline of the work being covered in each curriculum area between now and

the end of the year.

Maths In terms 5 and 6, we will continue to focus on problem solving, ensuring we revisit and cover the topics of number and place value, the four operations (+, -. x and ÷, for straightforward arithmetic and word problems), money, capacity/volume, fractions, shape, statistics and time.  Children will be encouraged further to choose the most appropriate method for any given problem or calculation, and to use inverses to check if their answer is suitable.

Keep learning 3, 6, 4 and 8 times tables over and over, as well as building time telling and money (adding, paying and calculating change) into daily life.

EnglishEnglish will comprise spelling and grammar lessons, with the focus being on applying year 3 curriculum spelling patterns in writing. Children will use their English writing skills to write about Anglo-Saxons and village settlements, as well as to creating and describing their own characters and writing poems.  We will be practise comprehension skills and this can be supported at home by encouraging your children to re-read and analyse their school reading books.

Science - The topics to be covered will be ‘Plants’ and ‘Rocks’.

History - The children will be studying the Anglo-Saxons.

Geography - Children will be learning about village settlements.

Art - In Art, children will be studying illustrating, with a focus on the illustrations of Quentin Blake.

DT - Children will make their own picture frames.

RE - Children’s RE topics will be Judaism and the Christian Values of the School.  Forgiveness, Aspirations, Interdependence, Truthfulness and Humility.

ComputingThe areas of study will be communication and presenting and data collection.

Music - This term children will continue to learn the recorder, developing their skills as an ensemble.

PE – OAA (Outdoor Adventurous Activities), Rounders, Tennis and Athletics – Children will have PE lessons on Mondays and Thursdays (Outdoors) and therefore need APPROPRIATE KIT to be in school AT ALL TIMES.

OUTDOOR KIT CONSISTS OF: Team colour T-shirt, shorts or jogging bottoms, sweatshirt/fleece/tracksuit top and trainers (and a pair of socks too for girls who often wear tights) and a hair bobble to tie up long hair.

Homework - Homework will still be given on Wednesdays and must be handed in on Mondays.

Please continue to read to your child and to listen to your child read regularly, and question him/her about texts.    Please record and initial having listened to your child read in their reading record.  Their reading book and reading record need to be brought to school every day and come home from school every day.

Pastoral - Please ensure that your child has a water bottle (separate from their Packed Lunch drink) in school every day.

Thank you and kind regards,

Mrs MacKellar

P.S. We are looking for a couple of parents to go on a short notice reserve list for our trip to London to see Matilda. If you feel that you would like to join us and will be able to attend on the day with very little notice, please see myself or Mr Parr.
